debian-installer and lilo

Hey guys,

I tried all debian-installer versions from beta 1 thru 3 (cause it kicks ass) and neither lets me install lilo as my boot loader in the setup. So I am forced to use grub, then change it to lilo (cause I don't like grub!) and I managed to screw up WINDOWS by configuring grub last time and I'l try to avoid that this time. I'm guessing they are gonna fix that (since lilo is in the choices in the setup) but this is the only minor thing that bothers me of the deb-installer so I'm tempted to try again very soon

Question is, how can I safely install lilo to the mbr without installing grub. Configuring lilo on slackware is easy (/sbin/lilo always worked after editing /etc/lilo.conf for me) but on Debian it's another story. /sbin/lilo does not add the images like it should. All I know is I have to create manually the conf file.

Thanks.

I haven't used lilo for awhile now, but if you are trying to play with it without breaking your current config can you just change the drive that it installs on to be /dev/fd0 (floppy) so you can test your setup?

Well if you have lilo installed already on ur machine, then all u need to do is edit /etc/lilo.conf. To install lilo on mbr, following line need to be edited.

boot=/dev/hda

here hda is the harddrive. Once u have finish editing the conf file, just run lilo (ie $lilo) and that'll do the job for u.

You could also use "dpkg-reconfigure lilo". If theres no lilo on ur machine, do apt-get install lilo.

Good luck

dr0ker, good idea lol havent' thought of using floppies.

I might give it a try to setup lilo on a floppy, then permantly install it without installing grub.

dimi, when you install debian via the debian-installer, latest version of lilo comes already with it. It's just that configuring/installing it seems different compared to slackware ... or I might be just very sleepy.

Either way! thanks guys
