Debian installation problem, please advise...

hi,
I'm trying to install the AMD64 version of Debian 4.0 r3.

everytime I try, the installation hangs. the last instruction/process it seems to be doing is:
parport 0: PC-style at [memory location], IRQ7 [PCSPP, TRISTATE, EPP]

is this a conflict with some device I have attached?
(EPP = enhanced parallel port, right?)

anyway, please help

Copy a few more of the last lines please.

You do have a 64-bit processor, right?

Googling the error seems to indicate it's a printer. Unplug the printer and try again?

If this is your first Linux installation, try something easier than Debian.

If you have some Linux experience, try installing Lenny instead. Etch is getting a bit long in the tooth, especially when it relates to hardware less than a year and a half old.

it's my first install of Debian in quite some time. I have experienced issues with Linux installs (Fedora, Ubuntu and Siddux) on this Asus motherboard before, but googling doesn't turn up any major issues and I can't figure out why, after disconnecting all USB devices (including my HP OfficeJet), the install still hangs at that stage.

the last 5 lines are as follows:

libata version 2.00 loaded
PNP: the driver 'parport-pc' has been registered
PNP: match found with PNP device '00:08' and the driver 'Parport-pc'
parport: PNPbios parport detected
parport: pc-style at 0x378, IRQ7 [PCSPP, TRISTATE, EPP]

I can't see anything obviously 'wrong' with the above, no conflict warnings or failed initialisations... what could be up?

btw, a little about my system configuration. I have 2 SATA II hds, not configured as raid but just master and slave, I have over a dozen partitions across the drives, an instance of WinXP (which I'm using now) and 2GB of DDR2 ram. my mobo is an ASUS M2N4 SLI, with a NVidia GEForce 6500 card.

it's an old system and I want to configure it to Linux so that I can work within the LAMP environment, as I want to move over from asp/IIS.

Have you tried disabling PNP in the BIOS? If not, try it and see if it helps.

I tried disabling PnP in bios, but ended up with the install hanging at some io stage.

I think that release of Debian just isn't going to work with my mobo.

thanks for the suggestions though
