Interesting. I had the exact same thing happening to me. nvidia nforce4 chipset and an ati x300 PCIe card. Install went fine and I could use some apps but when I started firefox or mozilla the system would lock up hard (not just X. The box wouldn't even respond to pings anymore). Tried it a couple of months ago with debian etch and sid. I didn't have time to fool around back then since I needed my computer to actually work, so I didn't do much in terms of trying to figure out what was going on. I have since then installed ubuntu dapper (beta) and it works fine. I'm even running debian (sid) in a xen virtual machine where I didn't come across this problem so I figured it's been a bug in a package that's since been updated (then again a virtual machine is probably quite a different matter).

Not much help here, I know. Just thought I'd let you know it's not just you experiencing this problem.

edit: oh, and btw: I tried both the i386 and amd64 version of etch. Same result.
