debian install new kernel

Hi,

I tried to install kernel 2.6.24.7 in debian lenny.

When I reboot I get the error message:
Begin: Waiting for root file system... ...
Done.
ALERT! XXXX does not exist. Dropping to shell!

BusyBox v1.01 (Debian 1:1.01-4) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

I use "ls /dev", and see nothing like "sda*" or "hda*"
Though with the original kernel I'm able to see sda, sda1, sda2 in my file system.

I also checked /proc/modules, dm_mod is there.

I have initramfs rather than initrd in my system

I tried to install yaird through apt-get but it cannot find the package
I also tried reinstall udev, which say it is already the latest version.

Does anyone know what is the problem?

I didn't even know you could use udev with lenny running a 2.4 kernel. 2.4 used to have devfs.

Where do you see 2.4?

What is the XXXX?

I use 2.6 kernel not 2.4.

Sorry, XXXX is /dev/mapper/aaa, which is the root directory for my old kernel, and I'm using it for my new kernel as well

Is this a kernel you made, or one downloaded from the Debian repo?

Mmm, time to get new eyeglasses I see.

What does "cat /proc/cmdline" say?
