Debian Etch + Nvidia 8600 GT

Hi everybody.

I just set up a vm using MS virtual pc running the last debian.
I did the "empty" install, so nothing special was added (I mean the base system, no preconfig massive apt-gets).
i am trying to set up my nvidia drivers but both the "module assistant" way (which was
100% succesful, but startx gives me a device not found) and the nvidia (due to version gcc..) failed. So I though of checking
if my kernel is actually seeing the card with "sudo lspci -vvv | grep nVidia" and this
gave me nothing. Can anybody tell me which my next step should be?

(btw, everything works fine with the vesa drivers (and I installed xfce, if this matters))

Thanks a lot!

Most virtual Machines do not support 3D acceleration, and MS Virtual PC is no exception to that rule. You will not be able to install those drivers and have them work successfully..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Virtual_PC
Quote:
Virtual PC emulates the following.

* 32-bit Intel Pentium II processor (but virtualizes the host processor on Windows versions) with an Intel 440BX chipset
* standard SVGA VESA graphics card (S3 Trio 32 PCI with 4 MB Video RAM, adjustable in later versions up to 16 MB)
* system BIOS from American Megatrends (AMI)
* Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 ISA PnP (native Vista audio when Vista acts as host and guest)[clarify]
* DEC 21041 (DEC 21140 in newer versions) Ethernet network card.

USB support is notably absent. Not all programs are guaranteed to work because they can use undocumented features of hardware, exotic timings, or unsupported opcodes, although overall compatibility can be considered satisfactory.
