Question debian etch?

Just curious... is there a debian etch installer or install disk one with the 2.6.18 kernel?

Last I knew Etch installed with 2.6.17, but you can easily install the 2.6.18 kernel.

Of course I may be wrong about the 2.6.17, as I use Sid.

Try here if you need the newer hardware support, these are backported to Sarge but if you need Etch then just do a base install then dist-upgrade before installing any desktop.

I just installed etch, using the latest daily netinstall.iso
changed the sources.list to sid.
installed the newest Debian kernel (2.6.18-2-686)
restarted the machine
installed the proprietary nVidia drivers..
changed the sources back to etch..
worked like a charm.

Installed and running etch RC1 yesterday arvo. Worked a charm and configured everything happily. now got non-free nvidia drivers running on etch stable.

Really happy with the etch release so far. Havent had this much ease in a long time.

I've installed etch from last weeks build (3x cds), all went well except for no network(so cant do net-install) even after upgrade kernel to 2.6.18.2+4, have rtl 8169b and ipw3945,rtl now working but no wireless... and for some reason the cpu scaling only works on one cpu?? Am not gonna give up...
Just thought that the 2.6.18 kernel would make easier install as it supports more hardware.

One strange thing though, dapper with 2.6.15 sees all (must be heavily patched?) but edgy doesn't with 2.6.17...

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try out a few as I have some spare disk space.

Sorry to come in on this thread, but where do I get later kernels than my 2.6.11, that I have on Etch?

I tried the unstable repo, the same as craigevil shows on his sources.list, but synaptic only shows the 2.6.11 one as the latest.

I ask because I have neglected updates for some time on Etch, and have just installed over 1000 packages (711MB), and that was some fun on dialup, but an update applying to udev said it needed at least a 2.6.15 kernel, but I don't know where to look for later kernels.

In grovelling mode.

Nigel. aka farpoint.

btw. If craigevil is reading this. Thanks for the repo for opera. I didn't even know there were repo's for it. One problem though. Apt's complaining about not having the public key. Where do I download it from? And I'm sorry, and have imported keys before on Debian, but have forgotten how to do it. Magic incantation for importing key required.

Looks like you should be able to get 2.6.17 by installing the linux-image-2.6 package for your arch.

Code:
apt-cache policy linux-image-2.6-amd64
linux-image-2.6-amd64:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 2.6.17+2
  Version table:
     2.6.18+5 0
        600 http://ftp2.de.debian.org sid/main Packages
     2.6.17+2 0
        990 http://ftp2.de.debian.org testing/main Packages

Sounds like some real fun, use apt-cache search linux-image for newer images available if you do not want the generic package I suggest installing above.

Try using gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --search-keys 12345678 replacing the 12345678 with the last eight numbers/letters of the key or even all the number/letters not found in the apt warning. If on the keyserver then gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys 12345678 to get it into the keyring then gpg --export --armour 12345678 | apt-key add - to put it into the apt keyring. Otherwise it is going to the Opera website and getting the public key by download then gpg --import /path/to/key_file.asc then use the export line. All this as root of course.

Hi Stephen. Can't get the key for opera. The site doesn't have the key, but just directs you to a keyserver, and that just times out giving me a keyserver receive failed: keyserver error.

The opera key isn't a problem. I'm more concerned with being able to get later kernels.

I ran apt-cache search linux-image, which gave me a bunch of kernel images, but how am I supposed to install them?

This isn't your problem but it doesn't make any sense that etch updates are telling me that I need at least a 2.6.15 kernel for udev, but no such kernel shows up on synaptic. All a bit bizarre.

The linux-image files are the kernel. Something like
Code:
apt-get install linux-image-2.6.18-2-686

I usually just do apt-get install linux-image-2.6-686 which should default to the latest kernel.. 2.6.18-2

saves having to know the exact version number if you just want the lates one in the repository.

Dunno why synaptic isn't offering you the kernel updates. apt-get dist-upgrade should..

I knew there was a reason I still preferd the command line over the GUI interfaces

Ok. I screwed up. I tried the linux-image command yesterday, but I think I made a typo. What didn't help is that I've been looking on synaptic under "kernel image" where my 3 installed kernels are listed under, and hadn't looked under "linux-image".

I ran apt-get install linux-image-2.6.17-2-686, and it installed ok, along with 4 other packages. the install indicated that 2.6.17 had been added to lilo, but not so, and I had to add it to /etc/lilo.conf manually, but no big deal.

I had some problems with the sound with the 2.6.17 kernel, but messing with options, and alias's in /etc/modprobe.d/sound has fixed that, but the problem I was trying to fix with the TV card on later kernels than 2.6.8 hasn't been resolved.

Thanks for all the help. I'll just continue trying to resolve this problem.

What brand/model number of TV card do you see any output in your dmesg about it being detected? For the Opera if using this repository here then you can cut'n'paste the public key block at the bottom of the page into a file to be imported then put into the apt keyring, the key appears to be expired now but if that is the one being complained about ...

Hi Stephen. Thanks for the help with the key. I copied the key block on that page to a file, then ran the --import, and --export lines, and it appears to be working ok.

The TV card is an Hauppauge Win TV Express model 44919 rev E160, and uses the bt878a chipset.

I have had to add 2 lines to /etc/modules to get it to work, as below.
bttv tuner=38 automute=0
tda9887 port2=0 pal=I

This works fine with the 2.6.8 kernel, for both sound and vision, but I only get vision with the 2.6.11, and 2.6.17-2-686 kernels, apart from some static. This indicates that the options for tda9887, particularly the "port2=0" which enables the sound, arn't being set.

If I reload the tda9887 with.
rmmod tda9887
then
modprobe tda9887 port2=0 pal=I
then I get sound ok.

Well after all that rambling, I think I've fixed the problem by adding an options line to /etc/modprobe.d/sound as below.
options tda9887 port2=0 pal=I

Thats fine now for the 2.6.11 kernel. With the 2.6.17 kernel I have sound for the French channels now, but the "automute=0" option for the weak UK channels is not being set, so another options line in /etc/modprobe.d/sound.
options bttv automute=0

And that has fixed the problem with the 2.6.17 kernel.

Thanks for your interest in my problems.

Nigel.
