Debian is and always will be free and open in every sense of the words, as written in the
Social Contract.
At heart, Debian is a server distro, with its structure and release cycle reflecting this fact. But it is so malleable that it can serve many, many purposes. For instance, I think it makes a great workstation due to the wealth of compiled binaries available and the marvelous APT. It does require more knowledge to install pure Debian on the desktop, or server for that matter, but rewards are aplenty.
Ian Murdock, of Progeny, is planning to release and support a common distro based on Debian Sarge and LSB 3.0 for the enterprise. Large corporations often prefer complete software solutions with service and support for their IT needs. This is where MS has been successful. However, LSB 3.0 promises no vender lock-in.
Ian is not trying to commercialize Debian but, I think, trying to rally all derivatives to be compatible with Debian proper.
