Debian - can't use keyboard/mouse Gnome

Hi,

I've just installed Debian 3.0 and it boots fine but when x starts i cant use my keyboard or mouse. i couldnt even get to console mode, but luckily i have knoppix and dropped in to init 1 mode...so is there an easy solution for this?

I can use my keyboard fine at the console...where do you think I may have gone wrong when installing X and what direction shall i take to get the gui working.

Im looking through the deb-gdm config html files for clues now...

Any ideas would be appreciated...

Oh yeah - Im a redhat softie trying Debian.

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and choose the proper ones from the dialogs presented or edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 by hand to put in the proper settings. Hint since you have a knoppix disk boot with it to the graphic interface and check in the config file already mentioned then for the settings it uses then mount your / partition and edit the file used there. The detection as X sees it would be in the file /var/log/XFree86.0.log you may be able to see where it is failing. If these suggestions do not work out then can you post the config file and the log so we can see what is going on.
