Exclamation debian breaks debian-mulitimedia.org !

Hi,

I have just updated a few packages and noticed a new dependency in the package gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg.
This package now strictly enforces the debian version of ffmpeg. You have to uninstall the version from dmo and this will basically break every package from dmo repository.
A reason is given in the changelog
Code:
+ Add versioned dependency on libavcodec52 (<< 5:0) to prevent usage
with the ffmpeg packages of the Debian Multimedia project. Their ffmpeg
packages break gst-ffmpeg and cause users to file useless bugreports in
       Debian or upstream.
This is, of course, nonsense considering the amount of "useless" bugreports he will receive from dmo-users, when this package hits testing.

So take this as warning if you are a dmo-user. How are you going to deal with this ?

If I used this package I would do something like:

Code:
aptitude forbid-version gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg=0.10.11-4
You may find a deluge of bug reports on this might get the problem solved before it hits Testing.
Cheers for the heads up though.

It seems as if the gstreamer maintainers are really pissed by users filing "useless bugreports"
I still can't understand it. A user, who knows that gstreamer-ffmpeg is the source of his problem, probably also knows that the ffmpeg api changes sometimes. Why would he file a bugreport against this package.
A user who doesn't know it would more likely rant against totem, or whatever app stops working.
Maybe the gstreamer guys are just a bit oversensitive.

Anyway, forcing people into using a mangled ffmpeg version, which lacks all relevant encoders, cannot be the solution. I truly hope that this is handled in a more useful way.

Edit: Just had to edit this post, to emphasize just how bad this solution is. Words cannot express my disappointment about this dependency
