Debian base installed

I've installed woody and went through the base-config program after base was installed. In the part were you start apt-get and it asks you to choose a server to download the rest of the packages, it can't connect to the server.

I then switched virtual terminals and logged in as root and ran ifconfig and it pointed out that I only have a loopback, I don't have eth0. How do I get my eth0 configured, or at least get eth0 up so it will look for DHCP?

I did try following the information in the man page for ifconfig, and I've also went through the NET-howto, but I couldn't get it to work. ifconfig did point out that (when I attempted to configure eth0 and bring it up) that some error or something I can't remember what it said, however debian said that it could be an IRQ problem, but I couldn't find one to the best of my ability.

Thanks for the assistance.

Yes it is supported, I've had it work under SuSE, RedHat, Knoppix, Slackware, just to name a few, I just don't know how to configure it.

If you tell us what network card you have perhaps we can help getting it going.

I haven't tried the debian distro, but here is the site for the manual

http://www.debian.org/releases/stabl....html#contents

Look at section 4 and 7

Most of the installation tips are here. It basically looks as though the network configuration never found you eth0 card.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I love Linux and even as a network admin, I hate F#*@'in with it too much!

Did you try modprobe eepro100? If that works without errors, then try ifup eth0 to try to bring it up. If it's not configured you will probably get a couple of errors and you will have to edit the /etc/network/interfaces file. If you don't have an eth0 entry there you can add it (use man interfaces for help and information). A simple DHCP entry would look something like this:
Code:
# First network card
iface eth0 inet dhcp
If the above works you might want to add the module name (eepro100) to /etc/modules so that it is loaded automatically on bootup.
