I just installed debian with the 2.4.? kernel and am ready to get it to work. I'm gonna try getting my NIC running first, then just using apt-get to fetch x-window-system
why don't you try knoppix? you can upgrade it to debian sid by editing the /etc/apt/apt.conf and /etc/apt/sources.list and it should be able to detect your hardware..... at the least you can run it as a live cd to see if it will work well enough with your hardware.
