Debian 4.0 stable, where is it?

I can't wait for the official stable release for Debian 4.0 to come out. This is of particular importance since I have an Opteron PC, and thus want my 64-bits (version 3.1 doesn't have an official AMD64 version, but 4.0 will).

Looking on their web site, they claim that December will be when it comes out. Well, it's December, so where is it?

This is the only thing that's really stopping me from installing Linux. I suppose I should buy another HD to install it on, but not until Debian 4.0 comes out. Well, I guess I can use XPPro32 a little longer.

This is in fact one of the primary reasons I chose Debian over Slackware (no official AMD64 Slack).

I've never used Linux as a primary O.S. on my primary workstation before, though I've dabbled in it with VMWare. I figure if I make the leap I may as well use the 64-bit version, since I have an Opteron PC and nearly any new PC supports 64-bit.

Plus the Secure-APT sounds cool.

Theories? Comments?

Ben

P.S. If this sounds pushy and impatient, I apologize but I'm convinced Microsoft is evil. Thankfully I've used Linux in a couple servers and VMWare so I know enough to do basic important things (such as setting up anti-virus). I just want to make the switch, and now I'm starting to get on edge since the version I need isn't out yet when I thought it'd be.

Etch is close to release but not out yet, it was set for december 3 then delayed to "sometime in december", debian is notorious for inacurate release dates though.

That said even pre-release debian testing is more stable than most distros post-release. so rickh's link to debian is just fine ;)

be warned though that if you use the 64bit version you will not be able to use flash and probobly some other things, installing a 32bit firefox may be a workaround though.

Just install it now. Because Debian says it is still testing doesn't mean it won't work right. Debian has always been notorious for waiting until a release is so stable its ridiculous. I'm using it on three machines, and aside from some little, insignificant quirks it works great. I've run probably 300 programs, installed 1500 packages, compiled five kernels, set up nfs, ntp, installed the nvidia graphics driver, tweaked x, got everything running on the 2.6.19 kernel, which has excellent ATA and SCSI capability, although it doesn't come as a debian Etch package. I haven't tried KDE in Etch for a while, but I use gnome all the time. The os installed beautifully, configured everything correctly, and it just worked. Besides, if you are going to run Debian, you are either going to live in the stone age or run the "testing" branch.

Yes, testing is fine -- I've been using it for years with no problems worth mentioning. Use the link to the rc1 installer above; even though it's possible to install etch from a sarge disk, there's a messy bit with the kernel upgrade and switch to udev. The etch installer works fine, though I don't prefer the graphics install.

i run testing and sid(unstable) for many years with out problems....currently running a mix of Sid and testing

I've just install amd64 a few days ago myself and so far its running fine. I went from etch to sid. For flash try Gnash instead. Not sure if it's in etch though, but is in sid.
