Debian 4.0 not bootable
Hi,
Downloaded Debian 4.0 2 week's ago. I downloaded all 3 DVD iso's from official torrent of Debian. My friend burnt all 3 iso's. 1st DVD is not a bootable DVD. We thought it's a problem of DVD writer. I burnt branded SONY media with 8x speed on newly installed SONY DVD writer with Ahead Nero 7.5.x version. Same problem. Debian 4.0 DVD no.1 can not show install screen. We downloaded "net install" and mounted debian dvd under /opt and done installation. Anybody had same problem ? Regards, Amey. |
The images are to be burned as an ISO image. Do not copy the contents of the image to the disc, it won't work (as you've noticed). Nero does offer an option to burn iso images, but somehow Nero doesn't want users to know about it as the've hidden it pretty well ;)

When you burn your files select the file type as .iso

Hmm ...I burnt that ISO as it is. nero successfuly showed me that the respective image is in "ISO" format and it can burn it.
I burnt the 1st DVD as it is. |

I have had problem with some computers booting from cd/dvd if it is set to slave. It is simple but I always try the simplest solutions first.

Got solution.
I downloaded DVD 1 ISO from Official HTT Psite of Debian., Japan. When I open it in power ISO, it shows that the respective ISO is bootable. But when I open the previous ISO ( i.e. DVD 1 ofcourse which is 1st install DVD. ) in powe ISO, it shows that the repsctive ISO is not bootable. I guess it's a bug in a DVD image uploaded by Debian at Debian torrents. 1 of friend from United States, downloaded 1st DVD ISO from HTTP site of Debian. He had no problem. The DVD is bootable. Anybody downloaded ISO of Debian from Torrent and had problem ?:o |
Does the iso you downloaded via torrent, match the md5 hash posted on Debians site for that iso ?
if not, you've found your problem, your download was bad. ALWAYS check the md5 sums to avoid hassles. That's one of the reasons I like using K3B to burn images. the first thing it does it give you the md5 sum of the image so you can verify it before clicking the burn button, how convenient. http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/...so-dvd/MD5SUMS Code:

Try to boot the install media on a different PC; if it does not boot on several PCs then you know there's something wrong with your burn. P.S. Added later: If it does boot successfully on another PC then you probably have a hardware incompatibility issue with your PC. Good luck. |
does k3b works on gnome?
|
Yes, I've used it several times.

download netinst image of the lenny or etch release[ its about 160 mb ] , and use apt-get to install the rest packages
