Debian 3.1 annoyances

I can't reach debian.org nor can I reach apt-get sites. Are the servers down?
This just happened recently. I am able to browse to other sites on the web, but can't reach debian.org.

Another issue is ,after a security scan, I get a open port 708? This port is not seen in my /etc/inetd.conf file and I don't know how to close it.
Setting up a firewall etc is not the issue-I wan't to find out where this port is.

Everything else seems to function on my newly installed machine even though its far from complete.

My install goes like this:
http://users.lmi.net/subjazz/debian3.1.txt

This is what apt-get gives me:
debian:/etc/apt# apt-get update
Hit http://kibi.dyndns.org ./ Packages
Hit http://kibi.dyndns.org ./ Release
Err ftp://ftp.debian.org testing/main Packages
Temporary failure resolving 'ftp.debian.org'
Err ftp://ftp2.fr.debian.org sarge/main Packages
Temporary failure resolving 'ftp2.fr.debian.org'
Err http://security.debian.org testing/updates/main Packages
Temporary failure resolving 'security.debian.org'
Err ftp://ftp.de.debian.org sarge/main Packages
Temporary failure resolving 'ftp.de.debian.org'
Err http://security.debian.org testing/updates/main Release
Temporary failure resolving 'security.debian.org'
Err ftp://ftp.debian.org testing/main Release

Thanks for any pointers on these issues.

I just ran apt-get update and was able to reach debian.org servers, so it appears they are not down right now.

Read this announcement to find out how to add security support for testing:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel.../msg00006.html

apt-setup (run it as root) is a good program for testing different Debian mirrors. You seem to have problem accessing ftp mirrors -- try http mirrors first.

It seems that your firewall is misconfigured. /etc/services doesn't associate any services with port 708. You can install lsof and run (as root) "lsof -i" to find out what ports your services are currently listening to.

Thanks. I deleted all my source.list and ran a apt-setup to try http mirrors and it worked.

I installed pmfirewall but am still getting fluctuating unkown port numbers (708;710;719) when I port scan. One day its 718 the other its 710 ......
very mysterious!?
I ran lsof -i and yes these ports are LISTENED and I'm able to telnet to them. No services seem to be running on these ports since it disconnects when I issue a command .

I put http://debian.org back into the default home page listing of the edit>preferences window and got the debian site back! in place of yahoo.com! had to put it back ? The mystery solved.

Did the security update following the instructions of:

Thanks very much for that link, but am still finding an open port that seems to change from 708 to 781. A different port opening at each reboot.
very mysterious!? A possible security bug within Debian , but I don't really know..
