darkice with lame support can't find lame

debian package for darkice doesn't include lame support but I need it.
I dowloaded the source
./configure --with-lame
gives me
checking for lame library at /usr ... configure: WARNING: not found, building without lame
I have lame installed and have used it. I tried
./configure --with-lame --with-lame-prefix=/usr/lib
but get the same problem.

What do I have to put in --with-lame-prefix to get ./configure to find my lame lib.

Are you running ./configure as an unprivledged user? LAME is normally stored in /usr/local/ which may not be part of root's $PATH.

apt-get source darkice
apt-get install liblame-dev
apt-get build-dep darkice
cd darkice*
vi debian/rules
# remove --without-lame
dpkg-buildpackage
cd ../
dpkg -i darkice*.deb
