Custom Login details

Hi all, what would i need to do to make my shell account print a specified text when i login? For example, when i login through another computer i'd have it say "Hello User1" this isnt a motd mind everyone, this is just a setting i would make for certain users. Im thinking a simple .c program would work but i wouldnt know what to do. Any suggestions? Thanx in advance!

Thank you Smedley for your reply. I just have a couple questions that maybe you or someone else can answer. When i edit the issue/issue.net files do i need to reboot the machine? I really cant afford to do that seeing how im apart of a network and provide services for another online community. I edited the issue.net and tested it by logging in again and it doesnt look like there's any change. Any suggestions? Thanx in advance!
