confusion re read only file

hi there
I'm trying to fix the file:
/etc/X11/XF86-Config-4

so that i can get my mouse wheel working.
I read the recent thread here re:this and tried changing the input protocol, but the file is read only.
How do i sort this out? I tried hitting the terminial command line icon and doing su, but that didn't seem to effect it..?

Thanks in advance for any replies,
Howard.

oh yeah, theres another query i have re this.
I seem to have two sets of data in this file, and two input device protocols:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "keyboard"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
Option "XkbModel" "pc104"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Protocol" "GlidePointPS/2"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

is this normal/desirable? Do i need to edit one set out?
The mouse is a packard Bell IO-3UP

many thanks in advance,
howard

Did you open a text editor from the command line once you had su'd? It's only the terminal session that's root.

It's OK to have more than one mouse configured, the configuration used will be the one called in the server layout section.
