configure usb modem on debian squeeze

hello
i am trying to configure a huawei E303 usb modem to work
with my debian box, no luck so far, i have tried a few how-tos
using usb-modeswitch, sakis3g and other software.

currently i can connect to the internet using a virtualized
windows OS, it works just by enabling the usb device to be
exposed to the guest OS, sharing the internet connection
and routing through a host-only adapter to the host OS

however i want to make it work directly from the host OS
using sakis3g, the menu says it is possible to switch usb
modes, but it fails to either 'prepare' and 'setup' the
modem.

i have noticed that some tutorials mention the ttyUSB* is
created, however i haven't seen that on my box, the tty's
go from tty1 to tty65 and ttyS0 to ttyS3,

i'm still trying to figure it out what i need to do
if i run the usb before starting the virtualization it
shows the vendor id: 12d1:1f01
after setting up all the virtualized hack it shows the
vendor id 12d1:14db meaning that it actually switched
modes!

thanks for your help and assistance!

have you checked /var/log/messages? It looks like the kernel module is not installed.
what will lsusb say?

lsusb shows this on inserting the device, working as mass storage:

Quote:
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 12d1:1f01 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
then after setting up the virtualization, it connects just by
exposing it to the guest, then lsusb shows:

Quote:
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 12d1:14db Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
