Configure network devices

I've been trying to find a way to restore my network configuration.
I was screwing around with my network settings and I managed to delete my loopback interface, and have no internet.

ifconfig only outputs eth0, loopback is missing. During bootup eth0 does not look for DHCP. I looked at the ifconfig man pages and numerous forum posts, couldn't find anything to help me out.

Really kind of stranded here, never had to configure network devices on one of my debian installs before. Everything worked fine before my tinkering.
running debian Sid, kernel 2.6.9.

Look in /etc/network/interfaces;

You need to have;

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# This entry was created during the Debian installation
# (network, broadcast and gateway are optional)

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Thanks a lot!
Posting this from my Debian install!

I actually had entries for both ethernet and lo in my interfaces:

Code:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo eth0 Ethernet LAN card
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
iface eth0 inet dhcp
name Ethernet LAN card

iface Ethernet LAN card inet dhcp
This is how my interfaces file looked, it appears that lo was assigning eth0 to be loopback?
weird
Well, I commented those entries out, added the ones you suggested and everything is running fine now

Good. That is really weird and never seen it before. Word of advice if you are messing with the network (we all do it for experience) then make a backup of the interfaces file. I love the way Debian handles networking via interfaces.
