configure Debian as a workstation
hi
I'm creating first time Debian Squeeze workstations.
It's just needed:
Gnome Desktop
Network/DHCP
SSH server
Internet browser
Adobe Reader
Flash plugin
Java
Totem
Citrix client
VMware-View client
Remote Desktop
conky
and are already installed.
Which services (daemons) can be removed/disabled?
Code:
# ls -la /etc/init.d
total 420

haha it seems we meet again. Install debian using the liveCD, and when it gets time to check which packages it can install(standard system utilities, ssh server, etc.) uncheck all boxes. This will install debian with ONLY the absolute minimum required to run on your system. Then when you boot into it you will have nothing but a console. Install the applications you need along with the graphical environment of your choice, they will pull the dependencies they need and you will have a minimalist workstation set up!
here is a good step by step guide (assuming you need it)
http://debianclusters.org/index.php/...tion_of_Debian
follow his instructions up to the "my base software to install" at which point you replace his software with your own.

Thx, I have installed a minimal Debian with Gnome, but don't know if I really need these all Startup Programs:
Code:
AT SPI Registry ?
Certificate and Key Storage ?
Disk Notifications ?
kerneloops applet ?
PolicKit Authentication Agent ?
Secret Storage Service ?
SSH Key Agent -> (disabled )
User folders update ?
I don't know what they're exactly doing. Knows someone which can be disabled from the startup on a normal workstation, or which of these programs have you normaly disabled on your debian non-server, workstation?

the only one of those im sure you can safely uninstall is the ssh key agent(provided you are not running an ssh server) all of the others seem necessary for either debian or gnome functioning. Post all your running processes and i can help you trim the fat a little bit more

this looks about as barebones as you can get. you can uninstall network manager if you are comfortable configuring your network settings manually through the terminal. I never liked the networkmanager interface personally. Other than that, it looks pretty streamlined

Disable avahi. That is a thing that is never used and interferes with networking sometimes.

Would reducing the number of Virtual Terminals streamline the system further? Many of us don't really use all of them...i am not sure if disabling some VTs will have any performance benefits though(?).

it would probably have some small benefits, they would be taking some CPU time. It really depends if the benefit is worth the time for cccc.

Open the /etc/inittab file
Code:
$su
#nano /etc/inittab
look for
Code:
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1
2:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty2
3:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty3
4:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty4
5:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty5
6:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty6
comment out the Virtual Terminals you don't want to use, for instance if you decide to use onlt VT 1 and 2, you'll have comment 3 - 6.
Note: backup the /etc/inittab file before doing this just in case something goes wrong.

as i said before, you can always uninstall network manager and manually configure internet connections using /etc/network/interfaces.
