Configuration original kernel

Hello,

I have installed Debian NetInst with kernel 2.6.19-rc1.
I mean that the kernel in the installation cd was 2.6.19-rc1.
So, no new kernel compiled.

I would like to know how it is possible to change its configuration.
I have installed "kernel-headers", done "make menuconfig" and configured and saved it.
But I have an error message during "make"
Quote:
Pas de régle pour fabriquer la cible « init/main.o », nécessaire pour « init/built-in.o ». Arrêt.make: *** [init] Erreur 2
Sorry, it is in french but it means something like
Quote:
No rule to build target « init/main.o », necessary for « init/built-in.o ». Stop.make: *** [init] Error 2
I think something is missing, but what ?

Can someone help me please ?
Is there any guide/howto to configure an original kernel ?

Install the sources for your kernel. This package should be in the repositories you use. Keep in mind that only installing that package is not enough, you must unpack and install the source by hand afterwards.

I've found this HOWTO quite useful: http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/K...ild-HOWTO.html

Search for the package linux-source in Synaptic or aptitude and install it. Then open a rootterminal and cd to the /usr/src directory. There should be a file in there like "linux-source-2.6.19.rc2.tar.bz2" (name may vary, but the kernel version and the word source are in there for sure). Unpack the file with the command "tar -xjf <packagename>" Now the machine has to do some unpacking and that will take a while. When it's finished you have a new directory. Enter that and resume building the kernel as you've described earlier.
