Command No Longer Works

I used this command a month ago on this very machine and it working fine to determine what my CPU was running at however now when I type this in, I get no response back at all.

Code:
# cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "cpu MHz"
Can someone tell me what changed or why I can't display my CPU speed.

Sorry - I can't issue this command as root for some reason. Anyone know why Root can't issue this command?

Code:
carlos@stricom:/proc$ cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "cpu MHz"
cpu MHz : 1666.723
