Choosing an external kernel image during installation

Hi all. Here's my problem: i got myself a brand new Apple powerbook5,8, latest release. Can't install Deb on it due to ide-scsi mod wich makes it impossible to recognize any ide (cdrom in this case) dev. Deb sarge installation cd comes with 2.6.8.2 and I am pretty sure that a newer kernel image would surely solve this matter in no time. Question: how do I choose a different (latest) kernel image during install? I would appreciate a step-by-step, wich I am sure is not even that long of a list
Thanks in advance!

You might want to try the Debian testing ('etch') netinstall image. It should have a Linux 2.6.12 kernel.
Debian unstable ('sid') has Linux 2.6.14, but at the moment being I cannot find any images for that.

yes, if you can boot of the cd, why can't you install

to select another image DURING INSTALL, the install would have to boot, right?

That makes perfect sense. But the problem I was facing comes up AFTER booting up from the cd, ergo when the macintosh's open firmware (read "bios") has already selected the boot device.
That means that I am perfectly able to choose a kernel image at boot time, but once booted up with the chosen kernel no ide-scsi (or other module) gets loaded. That means that no kernel image is able to detect the correct ide chipset. A later kernel image (> than 2.6.8.2) could solve the matter. And I should try to make a custom install disk with a compiled 2.6.15 image mounted and see what happens ... but first i'll give a try to the net-install...
