Change keyboard language

I have just installed kannotix and I can not find out how to permanently change the keyboard language from US to UK English - which means that I can not type my password.
I have googled and looked in the user manual but no joy so far.

I don't use Kanotix, but try:

# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

and in the keyboard section, change 'us' for 'gb'
