im looking for a tool in debian to automount cdroms upon insertion and allow me to use the eject button on the drive ive been told that mandrive and suse support this featureive looked at some of the stuff in the deb repository but to no avail\

Have you tried autofs or supermount? http://supermount-ng.sourceforge.net/
AFAIK supermount isn't included in debian kernels, so you need to patch it or use autofs.
would supermount support the cdrom button? and compiling im havinbg a problem with everytime i try to compile a 2.6 kernel when i reboot it it kernel panics with unknown block device on 0,0
I don't use automounting as I prefer the manual way, but I don't see why the button wouldn't work with supermount. Take that with a grain of salt as I haven't tried it.
For the kernel, have a look at the sticky about compiling, add to it the problem it or start a new thread about it.
