Can't log in as user in GNOME Debian 4.0

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hey all

I just installed Debian 4.0. I had Mandriva 2007 before and formatted only the root partition. The install was ok, no errors at all but when i tried to log on with my user account i got several error msgs:

1st that a file .dmrc was ignored and that the permissions are wrong. and then 2nd that my session had lasted less then 10 seconds and i should log in a failsafe session and the the permissions of /home are wrong.

I fixed the permissions on the file and /home. Now it tells me that /home/ju does not exist and then i get it returns me to the log in screen again.

I am logged in as root now and everything seems fine

Please help
Thanks very much

This can happen when you left the home partition and used the same user. Most of the /home/ju settings are from a different operating system, probably KDE desktop also. Now, even if you re-install Mandriva and try to use the same user, it will not be accessible because Debian has wrote a few of it's own files in there, and some are probably Gnome related if you did not do KDE in Debian.
If this is what you did, your only option is to create a new user by a different name (jo for example) with command as root from failsafe terminal or single user mode:
Code:
adduser jo
You will be prompted for password and maybe a couple little things to which you use the default. Then, as root, transfer all data you want to keep from /home/ju to /home/jo and log into jo's account. You can then delete ju's account and recreate it and transfer all data back to the new /home/ju as root and delete /home/jo and log into your new ju account.

Thanks

I created a new account and tried to log in just to see but it gives me same error msgs though. Should I just keep trying until it works or should I do something else?
