Can't install Wine 0.9.34 in my Debian x64 Etch testing

Hi.
I have been trying to install Wine for a week now without any success (from source). First I tried to install wine 0.9.32. Now I'm trying to install the recently released 0.9.34 version.

Wine has a page to help installing it in Debian x64 architeture, but nothing there helped me out.

".configure" works fine for me, but "make" gives me the following error message:

There is a wine's page that tell you to download/create a .deb wine package, and then run:

But, to create this new .deb file we need to add some repositories For Ubuntu Edgy (6.10) or For Ubuntu Dapper (6.06), and then run: "apt-get --build source wine", as this wine's page tell us to do:

But after you add any of these two Ubuntu repositories, when you run "apt-get update" you always get an error message. So, it's impossible so far to create this .deb file. And going back to the installation FROM SOURCE, it doesn't work either, giving the error message I quoted above.

That's it. I hope someone here can help me out in this installation process, because I need to install wine and then install wine tools too!! The softwares I want to install here REQUIRES Internet Explorer and the installation of IE without wine tools never worked for me.

I don't know if there is any new release of Windows Emulators for Linux, but If you guys know any BETTER emulator than Wine, for Linux, please post it here. If it's better than Wine I'll try it for sure.

If you have a bunch of ram, you can install vmware server and then install Windows as a virtual machine. It'll run okay with 512MB dedicated to the VM, but runs better with 1GB dedicated to the VM.

Also, is there any reason you didn't install wine from the repositories?

Hi. There isn't any wine in the repositories of Debian ETCH testing. Using Synaptic I've just found wine-doc and xwine.

But If you're talking about the repositories WINE offers to Debian users (to get the latest version), as you can see in my first post they aren't working. They are repositories for Ubuntu to be more specific, but wine says those are the repositories to create a .deb file to install wine in Debian x64 computers, since THERE ISN'T any specific version, so far, for this architeture.

So, the only thing left was to install it from source. But it didn't work. I believe these kind of problems don't happen in Debian computeres with i386 architeture.

That's an interesting offer, but I think it's TOO MUCH just to use a few programs/softwares from Windows. But I'll take a look in this vmware anyway.

Ah, I see. It doesn't exist for 64 bit Etch. It's only there for 386...

vmware server is $free (if that's what you mean by TOO MUCH). You just need a windows disk to install from.

You could try setting up a 32 bit chroot environment and then installing wine on the 32 bit side... I haven't tried this, but people do it for firefox all the time. I have a 64 bit processor, but just installed the 32 bit Etch because so many of the programs weren't mature yet on 64 bit last year... Maybe sometime I'll switch over in the future to take full advantage of my machine.

What I mean by too much is: Install and keep running two O.S., keep the computer slower, all of this, just to run a few programs.
About the other thing: I don't know how to set up a 32 bit chroot environment. To do this, I was following the instructions in Wine page. If you take a look above, there is a command to FORCE the 32 bits installation. But I wasn't able to do that (the reasons are there, above).

Maybe I should install a 32 bit version od Debian just like you.

Wine for amd64 in the unstable not working properly, I mean it can be installed but it cant playing a game properly.
So I try to find information about compiling/building wine on 64bit and now I have working wine 64bit native

and it works with all game (that supported by wine)
