Stuck again--can't get any USB device to work

Debian Gnu/Linux Woody 3.0r3 kernel 2.4.19.
MSI KT7 motherboard has a UHCI controller (usb 1.0)

I assume you have UCHI support enabled in the kernel, either built in or as a module. If its a module, have you modprobed it? Plug in a usb device and then run 'dmesg' to see if the system recognizes it. Post the relevant lines from the dmesg output and someone may be able to help.

(I like to run 'dmesg' before I plug in the device and then again after to note any changes.)

UHCI support is compiled into the kernel

Do you have scsi compiled in your kernel? My USB thumbdrive requires it. I think you need at least:

SCSI generic support
USB device filesystem
USB Mass Storage support
and possibly support for whatever type of memory you're trying to use (I have both sandisk options enabled... not sure if they're needed or not)

all found under Device Drivers -> USB -or- Device Drivers -> SCSI

From dmesg, it looks like your usb system is working okay... it finds the devices. I believe when your thumbdrive is working, it will be mounted on one of the scsi devices, e.g. /dev/sda1. dmesg will tell you where it is. e.g.:

As far as the printer... what does it do that indicates it isn't working? Are you using CUPS? Have you compiled in usb printer support, or modprobed it?

Oh, one more thing.... usb requires hotplug to work right... it looks to me like you've got it, but check for that in your kernel as well. Good luck!

Woops... the path to those kernel config options I gave you were for my 2.6 kernel... they may be in different places in 2.4. But I'm sure they're there somewhere... SCSI's been around for a while.

I'm pretty new to all this also, and don't really know what most of that output means. The only other thing that comes to mind is that maybe your system doesn't have a driver for the card reader, although it seems like it should just be able to mount it like anything else...

You didn't include any info about the printer, but here are some good resources to check:

You will need to find a driver(?) for your printer. I use turboprint for my epson, although there were several available. Yours may already be built into cups. Good luck!
