can't boot i386 etch iso.

I am trying to install ETCH. I downloaded the i386 iso, but it will not boot. Should I try the alpha instead? I only have 1 cdr left so this has to count.

Did you remember to "burn from image" when you made the CD? If you open the CD in windows, you should see a whole bunch of files and folders (i.e. the contents of the .iso file). If you see only an .iso file on the CD, you did it incorrectly...

What is your computer like? I believe alpha is for a different computer architecture. Most pentiums and pentium like machines are x86.

If you have a normal PC, no.
Their can be many reasons why it doesn't boot.

Bad download => check the md5sum

Bad burn => if you open the cd in windows/linux/..., does it show one .iso file or a few maps and files?

BIOS settings => make sure your cdrom is listed as the first boot device. Can you boot any other bootable CD?

I guess you figured it out that XP does not have any native applications to burn an ISO file. If you do not have Nero or Roxio you can download a free free ISO burning application. check out isorecorder
