Cannot see the username on GDM3 login screen + no reboot, shutdown option available

Hi,

I am using Debian Squeeze 6.0.6 with gnome version 2.30.2 (gdm3). I recently installed the updates and when I rebooted, I cannot see the username on gdm3 login screen. It only shows the computer name and the debian version, I don't have the fields where the username is shown and I can enter the password. I did
Code:

dpkg-reconfigure gdm3
in tty2 and the username appeared only in the recovery mode. Also, I cannot see the reboot and shutdown options in the gnome-panel anymore.

Any ideas? Thanks.

hi fluidguy, i dont know what exactli you did there and not much comes to my mind, but if you are desperate and not having other option you can try other dm(display manager), try using xdm or if you prefer kdm but the last will take more time installing and the first one its a simpler login window, the way to do it is change to a tty, try Ctrl+Alt+(F1..F6), i hope you know your root password, login as root, then install wichever you want to install: #apt-get install xdm or #apt-get install kdm, when done type at the root prompt #init 2 to exit graphic mode, wait several seconds, then #init 5 to enter graphic mode again then Ctrl+Alt+F7 to go to the graphical window, if that doesnt work type reboot at de prompt, to reboot the system, i hope this helps, let me know, luck!.
