cannot connet co x-server when type start kde

I think I am on sargo (thought it was 3.0 oops) did apt-get install KDE then did startkde
and get cannot connect to xserver

so what do I need to install to get KDE to work?

Try installing a desktop manager:

apt-get install kdm

You can start it by typing "kdm" from a console as root, but the next time you re-boot the computer, the kdm login screen should appear automatically. You can eneter your user name and password and select which of the installed desktop environments you would like to use (kde, gnome, etc)

And make sure you have installed the x-window-system , xserver-xfree86 , read-edid and mdetect packages.
