Can LMDE repository be used in Debian Sid?

Hello folks,

I would like to install Cinnamon on my -so far pure- Debian Sid system. (Cinnamon is the desktop environment used by Linux Mint, forked from Gnome 3 to resemble Gnome 2, somewhat). My question is, is it safe to use LMDE (emphasis on the Debian Edition part) repository on Debian Sid in order to install Cinnamon? Maybe through pinning and giving priority to the standard Debian Sid repository? I could try to get the sources and compile them, in case it's possible, but I would like to have the advantages of the repository updates and such.

Thanks in advance.

A couple of things, I have read and heard that Cinamon is available for LMDE but I have also heard and read that it isn't, a couple of weeks ago I took a look at the LMDE repository and indeed Cimamon wasn't in it. If It is just for the Ubuntu varients then I would assume maybe you cannot install it on the Debian varients but some people have apparently, I cannot find the pages I read it from now, done so.

To the other aspect of your question, is it safe to run the LMDE repository on a Sid system, probably although Sid is unstable and LMDE is supposed to be testing. I have never had any difficulty with it as long as you make all the Debian repository entries Sid you should be ok and will probably have a better and more "up to date" system from a Debian perspective IF you take all the normal recommended precautions of checking for bugs before you install any updates etc.

Hi, thanks for your answer!

Well, it seems to be already in the LMDE repository, so I guess it can be installed in Debian too. I saw it shortly after posting. I also found a site in Spanish explaining how to install it in Debian Testing, but I think I better try getting it directly from the LMDE repository to see how it works (the method from this site involves installing a package named cinnamuffin that is not in the official LMDE repo -or at least, I can't see it-, probably a modified version of Cinnamon).

Will try and report back. Thanks again!

Done! Installed Cinnamon as well as its dependencies directly from the link in my previous post, and it's working fine. I'll add the LMDE repo to my sources.list later and configure the pinning to give priority to the Debian standard repo (I'm lazy and sleepy to do it now). Hope nothing gets broken.

Cheers.

Well done, As far as I know the actual Mint repository wont compete with the Debian one. LMDE is afterall 99% Debian so it would be foolish of them to break the Debian aspect of the system. I think it will be ok as long as your keep away from packages like the mint-meta packages (there are at least 2) and also the mint-info-debian and debian-system-adjustments packages.

As long as installing from LMDE doesn't want to remove important Debian packages you should be just fine.

Might need to have both Testing and Sid in your sources.list as LMDE is based on testing,

Thanks for the warning, I'll keep it in mind.

Had not thought about it, thanks for pointing me that.

Cheers.
