I have compiled linux kernel 2.6.9 for my Debian. But when I boot it using the new kernel image,It print out error message on screen:
modprobe:FATAL:Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.9/modules.dep:No such file or d
irectory
pivot_root:No such file or directory
/sbin/init:426:Cannot open dev/console:No such file
Kernel panic---not syncing:Attempted to kill init!
What's the problem? I had compiled kernel 2.6.1 in my previous Fedora successfully. Why did I fail in my Debian. Is it the dependency of files? Someone said it was improper configuration of File Systems. And I assure it was not that point. And someone said I had not installed module-init-tools.But I had.
I also did "make install" which will copy the kernel to /boot automatically and update grub.
Then I typed "mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.9", and edit /boot/grub/menu.lst manually.

can i tell you why? well, it looks like your system is missing a 'make dep', plain and simple.
Originally posted by LittlesnowLinux I thought so at first. But when I used "make dep",it said "it is no neccessary to make dep"
So I am confused by the problem
I haved solved it.Because in the "mkinitrd" step,I did not include the source directory, typed it as "mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.9-1-686",while the correct solution is "mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.9-1-686 /lib/modules/2.6.9"
