Can't start Xwindows

Hi you guys, I made a clean Debian install and everything went smooth, then I typed in startx and it didnt work, now I don't remember exacly waht it said, if it was "unknown command" or "no such file or directory" (must be one of those two)
I even reinstalled Debian from scratch and got the same problem; eventually I switched to Ubuntu 5.10 which I am 100% satisfied with, but some times I still wonder what went wrong with Debian... maybe it does not come with Xwindows? Or it was me, I did something wrong?
Now I'm on Ubuntu Breezy and planning to stay with it for a while, but just out of curiosity, anyone knows what happened?

Perhaps you did not install X. Debian has been shipping with X for a long time now.

Curiosity is very good
Too bad you didn't come here to ask! Ubuntu is great also.

During the netinstall, you can choose "desktop machine" or something like this(I've never done it).

If you want to install it afterwards,
Code:
apt-get update
and then for gnome:
Code:
apt-get install x-window-system gnome gdm
on the contrary, for kde:
Code:
apt-get install x-window-system kde kdm
Then you are prompted for configuring your Xserver (mouse,screen,..)

and that's it.

yeah that's what I've been thinking (no X included).
Too late, now I'already on Ubuntu and happy with it, so I may try this one next time, but anyway; I downloaded the CD image from the Debian website and installed it last december, that should have come with xwindows if it's been doing that for a long time.
I could install Debian again just to check if that was the solution
I guess I have a geek's soul after all
:-)
