I had to reinstall etch via netinstall from that last update... now I'm on a fresh system, but can't connect to other computers on the windows (samba) network.
I go to ==>Places, ==>Network Servers, ==>Windows Network, then double-click the Windows Network icon - in the past installs, this immediately brought up the computers on the network. Now, I get a "Can't Display Location" window, with "Couldn't display "smb:///".
What gives? Samba is installed, and the smb.conf has the correct workgroup name... what am I missing?
You need to install libsmbclient and/or libgnomevfs2-extra
Already had libsmbclient - installed libgnomevfs2-extra... No more errors, but I just can't see anybody else. "0 items" is in the bottom left corner...
Not seeing anything when trying smb:/// is apparently a bug that exists in gnome 2.6-2.8 but smb://server/share should work fine. You can also do smb://workgroup and you will be able to see the servers but not open them

Yes, this is what has happened for me, as well as the symptoms mentioned by earlier posters. But I am using gnome 2.12.2 - so what is the solution to see Windows workgroups/computers in ==>Places, ==>Network Servers, ==>Windows Network?

The best way to see your Workgroup/Domain computers is to do
go to ==>Places, ==>Connect to Server... then put in the IP address of the server.
as suggested by noxious. It works fine for me. I have been accessing computers over a domain network...
