can't make sound work!

Hi, Guy
Two days ago I installed sarge. A wonderful linux, yesterday I install Java using Java-Package, fakeroot stuff. Everything is fine.
But I noticed that my sound card does not work at all. I have a dell dimension 3000 and sound card is Integrated AC97 .

Please help!

Is your chipset from VIA ?
There's a VIA 82C686A/B, 8233/8235 AC97 Controller in the kernel (ALSA)

Sorry if this seems obvious, but I assume the machine did sound before........
