Can't logon to non-root users from wdm,xdm

Hi;
my machine celeron 366hz 256Mb mem 80Gig hd
Linux Imladris 2.6.7-1-686 #1 Thu Jul 8 05:36:53 EDT 2004 i686 GNU/Linux
Debian Gnu/Linux - Sid

I upgraded a bunch (over 90 if I recall) of packages via Synaptic to my Debian SID machine yesterday and this morning when my wife tried to logon wdm accepted her login and password but did'nt startup the window manager (WindoMaker) but just returned her to the WDM login screen. the same
thing for my login. but root starts up Windomaker just fine. NO change in this behavior after rebooting or if I start from Xdm rather than Wdm . All users can log in from the command line.
I created a new user as a test, but that user couldn't log into X11 either.

I can't find a log file for Synaptic or APT so I can see what packages were upgraded or reconfigured.

suspicious entry from /var/log/user.log:

Dec 20 06:51:59 Imladris wdm: AUDIT: Mon Dec 20 06:51:59 2004: 3150 X: client 3 rejected from local host

can anyone offer any insight or suggestions ?

Thanks

Jeff

Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and test if you can login from the command line.

I'm using wdm in Debian Sid and haven't so far noticed anything unusual. You may have encountered a bug in xdm/wdm (like rbochan suggests) but it may also be a bug in some other package that controls user passwords. If you can login from the command line, it's very likely an xdm/wdm bug. In that case one possible solution would be to temporarily disable GUI login (for example, via rcconf) and use the command line login until the bug has been fixed. Apt-listbugs will help you to avoid installing buggy packages.

it's fixed! - but why?

Following Rob's link I tried creating a .xsession file containing "exec wmaker"
in one of the users home directories (I did not have one there originally ) but I also deleted the .xsession-errors file - it was huge- . after rebooting all of the users were able to log in. but why would doing *anything* in one users ( not root) home directory effect whether another user could login ?

anyway thanks for the help

Jeff

Congratulations for the mysterious recovery. :) It might be also worth reading the .xsession-errors file to find out why it has become so big.
