Can't login/start KDE-3.1

Hi folks,

Debian - testing/unstable
KDE-3.1
GNOME-2.4

KDE failed to login/start with following warnings
"view details (~/.xssession-errors file)"

/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with wtmp and utmp
/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: running : sessreg -a -w /var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/lib/gm/ : 0 .xservers "-h "" -l : 0 satimis
+ wm=kde3
+ cp /dev/null /home/satimis/.kde3-errors
+ chmod 600 /home/satimis/.kde3-errors
+ exec

# cat /gdm/PreSession/Default
....
echo "$0 : could not find the sessreg utility, cannot update wtmp and utmp"
exit 0

# cat /home/satimis/.kde3-errors
.....
+ echo "kde3: kde3 not found, Quiting"
kde3=kde3 not found. Quiting
+ exit

# ls -al /home/satimis/ | grep kde
-rw-r--r-- 1 satimis satimis 1119 Jan 13 10:40 .gtkrc-kde
drwx------ 4 satimis satimis 4096 Jan 13 13:40 .kde
-rw------- 1 satimis satimis 528 Jan 13 13:28 .kde3-errors
-rw------- 1 satimis satimis 490 Jan 1 01:21 .kderc

(.kde3 not found)

Kindly advise how to fix this problem

TIA

(Remark: GNOME 2.4 can start without problem)

Hi,

Debian - testing/unstable

# cat /etc/hostname
localhost

It looks the same as previous. I have not touched it.

I think there is a problem in starting KDE. I could not read its folders on GNOME desktop. When the Debian box was running normal previously I could start KDE applications from GNOME desktop such Kedit, Kmail, Konqueror, etc. Now all of their folders disappear on GNOME desktop. I could not start them any more even on console window.

Hi,

# cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 debian localhost

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
# (added automatically by netbase upgrade)

::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

Also I have not altered this file manually.

What I can recall is as follows;

Aftter installing Debian (this box) from website. KDE 3.1 worked without probem. Gnome can't start. A few days ago I ran
- dselect update
- dselect select
(I did not make any selection, just pressing 'Q' to quit)
- dselect install
(/etc/apt/sources.list all pointing to 'unstable')

After rebooting the PC. GNOME 2.4 worked. Then I continued to setup/config the Debian box including installing new packages. Both KDE and GNOME were working normally. Day before Yesterday I tried to install 'Netscape';

- dselect update
- dselect install netscape

I became the present situation. KDE can't start. Gnome is working without problem.
