Can't get to shell when stopping x

I'm trying to install the proprietary nvidia drivers via smxi on debian jessie on my new pc. The computer uses UEFI and The graphics card is an NVIDIA geforce gtx 970 so the kernel doesn't support it with nouveau yet so i get a low resolution desktop when i start x. The problem is i can't get to the shell when i try to stop x. All i get is a black screen which i can't do anything with so i have to reboot the computer. Any ideas?

that won't stop X, but you will switch to another terminal. You can try to press enter to get prompt or press crtl-alt-f7 (or f8 or f?) to go back to gui.

Try Ctrl+Alt+F2 if that doesn't work you have to fix your console.

HOW are you booting into "text only"

edit the boot line and change "quite splash" to "text"

the terminal WILL be the ONLY thing
login as root( perfectly fine in a text boot)

BLACKLIST NOUVEAU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

rebuild the boot image without nouveau !!!!

cd to the location you saved the .run to
and run it
Code:
chmod +x *.run
sh *.run
then for EVERY!!! and all and i do mean EVERY!!! update to the kernel and x11 you will have to MANUALLY REINSTALL THE .RUN!!!!

it is way easier to use the debian package manager and install the deb package

Why is this marked solved? With other words: please tell us about the solution you've found.
I think you might fix it by adding "nomodeset" in your bootloader to your kernel arguments. (Google the specifics for your bootloader.)

nouveau

Yeah it turns out all I had to do was disable the nouveau drivers in grub at boot. I can get to the console fine now. I assume its like that because I have a fairly new nvidia card and nouveau doesn't support it in the default kernel.
