can't get display > 800x600

I'm a longtime slack user but am trying debian on my laptop due to Pat's recent illness. On slack 10 my display ran fine at 1400x1050, but I can't get it to run any bigger than 800x600 on debian testing, which I installed using the new installer, which was pretty cool. I've been beating my head against this for 2 days now and can't seem to get it working. There are no (EE) lines or (WW) lines that look like show stoppers in the error log. I could really use some help

Well, one thing that looks a little odd is you don't have refresh rates in your "monitor" section. Did you happen to save your old XF86Config-4 file from Slackware? You can probably copy it over and use it. The other thing is you can follow the Slackware guide here: http://www.bitbenderforums.com/vb22/...?postid=313121 It will work in Debian as well.

I have an Inspiron 8000 at 1400x1050. It is essentially the same display as yours. I'll try e-mailing you the XF86Config-4 file I have.

I used knoppix and managed to get the display to 1024x768. Using the "vesa" driver. The "ati" driver does not work for me in any way, shape, means, or form.

Hopefully, Pat will get better and Slackware will continue. Debian is a good distro, but not as good as slack, not by a long shot.

I may be mistaken, but the issue is likely with Xfre86, not Debian versus Slackware. In fact, your configuration file on Slackware should work the same on Debian. You should also be able to use the same configuration tools on Debian that you use on Slackware. I have an Inspiron 8000 at 1400x1050 and it has the ati rage mobility card. It is very similar to your laptop and works fine. I e-mailed you the XF86Config-4 file. Did you try using that?

Your x config file didn't work either, nor did my file from slack which was the first thing I tried. I get black screen, but the server doesn't really crash. I can ssh in to the box from one of my other machines to replace the file with the one that works. I am still tweaking your file to see if that gets it.
