Can't choose Alsa in Gnome

Hi

In my "Multimedia Systems Selector" I can only choose OSS or Custom. My kernel has all the alsa stuff configured and I apt-got alsa-base.
Why doesnt Gnome give me the option to choose alsa? Do I need adittional gnome/alsa packages? Which ones?

EDIT: Never mind I just saw that the titlebar of the multimaedia systems selector reads "Gstreamer preferences" and so I tried the gstreamer0.8-alsa package and that was it :-)

This is a problem with a media framework called GStreamer. It seems that you don't have the GStreamer ALSA plugin. I believe the Debian package for it is gstreamer-alsa.

Yeah, now if I only could make the PCM in the volume control stay unmuted!

Try running "alsamixer" as a normal user and then "alsactl store" as root.

I had to download alsa-base and alsa-utils from stable to make it work, but thanks.
I think if gnome provides the mixer, it should be able to store the settings itself. it's a bit weird the way it works now with all the available GUI configuration for standard desktop needs except in this case..
