Can't change screen resolutions by any way

Hi folks

I have ATI Radeon HD3870 and Samsung SyncMaster 950P Plus at Debian 2.6.18-6-amd64 but i can't change resolution and refresh rate (still 1600x1200x60Hz and i my eye starting suffer).
I trying in KDE "Change Resolution", pick 1024x768 and Apply. Now system logout and stopped at login screen. Ok, so i write my account name, my pw and go. But screen resolution is still 1600x1200x60Hz.
And refresh rate (in KDE "Change resolution") is at 85Hz but OSD in my monitor shows 60Hz and i think it is really 60Hz - eyes very suffering.
I've trying "xandr 1024*768" but that is absolutely same think like in KDE "Change resolution".

So i thought "maybe need originaly drivers like in windows", so go to at ATI web and pick, download and install that:

http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/l...64-radeon.html

and after installation i've use some command (cant recall that command) what was at end of installator and xorg has restart and by that time was linux inaccessible because everything was in smudge.
So i've reinstall debian, looking for google.com/linux and still can't figure out this.

So, please, if somebody know how bypass that sh*t, let me know (thx).
