Can't apt-get After Kernel Upgrade

I upgraded my kernel from 2.4.x-x-386 to 2.6.8-11-amd64-k8. Now that I'm running in the 2.6 kernel, I've found that I am no longer able to use the apt-get command. Apparently the 2.6 kernel can not see the Debian 3.1 disk. When I attempt to use the apt-get command I get the following:
Code:

computer:/home/halfpower# apt-get install alsa-utils
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
  alsa-base
Suggested packages:
  apmd discover
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  alsa-base alsa-utils
0 upgraded, 2 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/257kB of archives.
After unpacking 725kB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y
Media Change: Please insert the disc labelled
 'Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0 _Sarge_ - Official i386 Binary-1 (20050605)'
in the drive '/cdrom/' and press enter

When I put the Debian disk in and hit enter I am again with the following prompt:
Code:

Media Change: Please insert the disc labelled
 'Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0 _Sarge_ - Official i386 Binary-1 (20050605)'
in the drive '/cdrom/' and press enter

Does anyone know how I can fix this problem with apt-get?

I think you have to do apt-get cdrom first.
Or you can go to /etc/apt/sources.list and manualy add your cdrom .

When I type "apt-get cdrom" I receive the message "E: Invalid operation cdrom." As for my '/etc/apt/sources.list' file, I would not think this would be a problem though, because it looks the same in both kernels.

Sorry, the command is apt-cdrom .

If you insert the cd rom has it been mounted before you apt-get?

I think it doesn't need to be mounted.

For some reason I can't mount the cdrom in the 2.6 kernel. I am told that the device does not exist. Below is a print out of my terminal window showing this.
Code:

computer:/home/halfpower# mount -t iso9660 -r /dev/cdrom /cdrom
mount: special device /dev/cdrom does not exist

I imagine this has somthing to do with the problem.

Maybe your cdrom is /dev/cdrom0 or /dev/cdrom1 or /dev/dvd .
Try to mount one of these...

When running the 2.6 kernel I see nothing that looks like it might be the cdrom. Here's my devices list:
