Cache

Hi all. As i use Debian Sarge more and more i understand more and more. Im a beginner and im trying to learn as much as i can. I have a few questions though.

df - Disk Free( checks the ammount of space left on the hd ), i dont understand is what this means

user@debian:~$ df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1 36946724 870644 34199288 3% /
tmpfs 257476 0 257476 0% /dev/shm

What i can tell you is that its a 40GB machine.

Used means whats being used already i understand that.

Available means whats left on the hd

But what i dont understand is the wacky numbers. Why cant they just put it in percentage on how much disk space is being used and how much is left?

Another thing. How would i go about checking for cache. And deleting cache to free up disk space?

i've been familiarizing myself with apt-get and i love how this distro is supported very well. Other distros dont have so much support( in my opinion ) i wouldnt even have it if it werent for the internet install

Anyway, thank you all in advance. And i hope no one gets annoyed with my newbie questions.

It does show you how much is used: that's the Use % column.

The numbers are the amount being used in 1k-blocks (kilobytes). For a nicer display, try df -h.
