I have tried burning one item and it still won't burn. There is a chance it is a hardware issue so I will put the burner into my other machine and see.

Did your Debian machine at least read cds correctly?
How were they mounted?

OK I will do a bit of a general test. Music factory made cd's mount fine and music plays, cdrw under system:Media it is unmounted and showing as a black which is correct-no option to mount when i right click, put in an install cd for windows version itunes and it mounted, put in an italian windows learning program cd and it mounted and last of all a blank cdr-straight off it makes a protesting sound(the drive) and the system shows it is a blank cdr but no option to mount when right clicked.

Sorry still haven't had a chance to wack it in the windows machine but it seems now it is not a hardware issue?

So let me make sure that we understand the situation. Correct any errors.

You have successfully burned DVDs
You have NOT successfully been able to burn your Ubuntu iso on CD
You are NOT sure if it is a good iso you are trying to burn
Your system reads DVDs and CDs just fine.
You no longer have the Ubuntu cd, and that's why you are trying to burn it.

What other items have you tried to burn on cd?
See if there is a md5sum you can check your iso against. Maybe you will need a new copy.

Yes I have burned dvd's.
Can't burn cd's because they don't mount properly anymore. That cd that I burned the iso onto was the last time I could do that. Now I cannot. That iso onto a cd(rewritable) didn't work (more info in previous posts about that).
The system doesn't read cd's properly or play music cd's as stated.
No I had a computer magazine dvd that had lots of stuff on it including the ubuntu iso. I gave that dvd away so I can't recopy it onto my hd to reburn. I still have the iso on my hd though and have tried to reburn it but it won't burn. I get that error stated previously.
Nothing burns onto cd now. The system doesn't fully mount cd's like it does with dvd's.
As states previously when I go to burn an iso that md5sum thing does it's job and I presume all is good. I have no idea what it is really but it gives me the go ahead to burn. What I might need a new copy of?

I thought you said they did read fine earlier. It definitely sounds like a good idea to try cds with this optical drive in other OSs.

Wouldn't that be a dvd iso, though? Even if it is small, couldn't you burn it on a dvd instead?

I was suggesting you compare the md5sum of your iso to an official release from Canonical (organization that makes Ubuntu). Sometimes, sites will list the md5ums of their files. I'm guessing that your's will not match up, though. Can you download a new iso?

If your optical drive's laser for cds is really burnt out then you might just have to use dvds. This linux.com article on Multiple live CDs in one DVD may be of interest to you.

Sorry maybe the cd's did mount earlier but things keep changing maybe and I don't remember as I am working on several machines right now.
Anyway the bad news is I have somehow gotten rid of that iso. I had an idea that I would put it on a data dvd and then put it on my windoze machine as that has a cd burner. The see how I go there. I don't know why I deleted the damn thing. Geez I have too much happening. So that is the end of the story as I have a strict 2gig internet usage there is no way i can get the iso from the net. Or a whole package of iso like in that multiple cd's on a live dvd thing. Good idea but here in Australia so many people are locking into usage limits like I am.
Anyway I Have learnt some things.
I think I did try to burn the iso on a dvd ....it didn't work from memory but I could be wrong. I know I thought of doing it but it is hard to remember now for sure.
OK I didn't know you could compare the md5sum with the conical site. I didn't see what result...like if there was a file saved from the md5sum. Sorry I still don't understand what it is. All I remember seeing from the burn app is there was the word 'md5sum' and a progress meter next to it then after that I could burn. There are so many things about linux I don't understand and it is having the time to explore everything.
Are you saying it is possible that the dvd drive has lost it's capability to burn cd's? Is that physically possible? Interesting. Ah well when I save up some money I may be able to get another as they are so cheap right now.

Yea, you are not the only one confused.

It might be a good idea in the future to write down the tests you have done and their result. Also, if you cannot download the ISO you need I am sure that you can order it. Canonical allows you to order it for free (could take up to 10 weeks for delivery) or purchase it (which I imagine would get higher priority for shipping). Just check the Ubuntu website for more information.

k3b does calculate the md5sum of the iso, but unless you compare it to something you will have no idea if it is correct. You can use md5sum in the commandline to calculate the md5sum as well. I am not sure if Canonical posts the md5sums for their iso images or not. Some sites do this, but not all.

Yes, your computer components are mechanical and electrical tools that can and will eventually fail. So, it is quite possible that your optical drive is failing on you.

I have had so many things go wrong on the machine with Debian that it is hard to keep up. As sometimes there is so much unecessary information that I report(as i have been told on forums) then I don't know what to report anymore. I just don't know enough about Linux yet!
Yeah I think I have read somewhere about opensource software being available that way but I think I always had problems with it. Can't remember how. I got my first distros from a friend and he installed Debian for me the first time but now it is hard to get his help.
OK well I will still find time to put the dvd drive in my windoze box and see what happens.
Thanks!!!
Well I put the dvd burner in my windoze machine and had almost the same problem. I got a little further in that it looked like it was going to burn a cd for me but then just before the end it stopped. I got the log file from it and this is what it says:
