Black screen TTYs

I got two problem which I think are related.

I installed KDE and removed Gnome. At this point, I didn't check if the TTYs were working. Then, after a few days, I upgraded from Wheezy to Jessie (Testing). I noticed that right after clicking shut down, I got a black screen instead of the messages which show which services are being stopped and so (I still see these messages on boot up).

Also, I realized that TTYs aren't working. When I switch to any TTY1-6, I got a black screen, exactly the same like when I shut down (that's why I think both problems are related).

Better say, they work, because I just tried to log in and create a folder, and it is created, but I don't see anything.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

I assume you're using KDM as your display manager?

Are you using a proprietary video driver?

Also:

Edit /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc and find the [X-:*-Core] section and uncomment
Code:
#TerminateServer=true
Code:
TerminateServer=true
Reboot (because of the blank ttys there isn't much point trying to kill X, etc).

Yes, I'm using KDM. Also I use ATI drivers.

I don't have such line in my kdmrc file. This is the content:

Code:

Add the line under the [X-:*-Core] section (4th section from the bottom).

Remove the proprietary drivers and see if the problem goes away.

Mmm seems to be the ATI drivers. Removed them and works fine. However, I need to have the ATI drivers due to better performance. Do you know how could I handle this situation? Any workaround?
