Best way to migrate to X.org

I see Xorg has made it to unstable but I wonder how to get it installed the right way. Is it just uninstalling the xserver-xfree86 and installing xserver-xorg? Are there any other xfree86 packages that can go aswell?

Regards

Hi,
I would advise you to wait until the release of all the X-related packages is

better handled. I just *tried* to do the upgrade from xfree to xorg, and it

has ended up in a nightmare. The shift key would not work any more and

other annoying things happened. Mind you I was warned at install that it

would cause problems and it did. So make up your mind and try if you are

sure.

"apt-get install xserver-xorg" did it for me. There are still some broken packages but they won't be upgraded as a lot of programs need to be rebuilt without the xf86 stuff. Haven't had much problems yet, just the normal configuring again and a few packages are being kept back.

I upgraded to xorg yesterday, and so far it hasn't been so bad, just the usual 'few broken libs' and 'held back' packages. The only problem I have so far is that it doesn't save my monitor configurations unless I do it by hand.

Besides those issues, it's running great. :)

I got it done last night after some fighting with aptitude to get the broken packages fixed. After reboot, everything seems to be fine. The only package I had to get rid of was GImageView, which I was thinking of finding a replacement for anyway.

I would definitely use aptitude to solve all the dependency issues. I don't like apt-get because it's difficult to control what get's updated and what get's held back.

I followed the instructions at debian-administration.org. Basically just: apt-get install xserver-xorg. I haven't had any problems yet.
