Best sound server for recording.

I am using ARTs for my soundserver, but everytime I try to record anything nothing comes through, I do have my input cable plugged in the right port and my Input set to line1

I am assuming that it is ARTs that is not designed for this, and what kind of server would be best?

The short answer is no sound server at all.

Most apps can use OSS / ALSA without having to go through the complication of adding a sound server. They're more hassle than they're worth.

So that would be what was causing my problem? Should I just kill ARTs from the shell or is there a better way to shut it down?

There's an option in the KDE preferences to switch off the sound server, but you'll still have to kill it, if it's running at the moment.

When you go into the control center there is an option to turn off the sound sytem. Is that what you mean?
