I have just installed beryl according to [url]http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install_Beryl_on_Debian
I added to xorg.conf the following lines:

I restarted and run beryl manager.Everything went fine.I had the cube and all the effects until i pressed Shift F9 for rain effect and then Shift F8.
Then the system froze and i had to restart.From that moment when i try to run beryl-manager the system freezes immediately.

If i run it from terminal as root it gives:Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

Normal, root is not allowed to connect to the xserver that was started by user. That's the basics of Xwindow security.

Launch beryl-settings as the same user as when you enabled water.
Each user has a different settings

as normal user run:
then you can run X apps from terminal as root.

It's not recommended, but its possible.

In this case - dont run it as root, or you will be saving the berl settings for root, which wont effect your normal user accounts settings.

In addition to xhost + you can install sux - but beryl is not one of those programs that it is useful to run in root.

Ok ,i run as normal user beryl-settings and it's ok.It runs.I unchecked water but still nothing.
I run beryl-manager as normal user and at the console gives:

Also it gave me emerald:4093 :GTK_WARNING**: Can't locate subject engine at module_path:"lighthouseblue"
I fixed that by installing gtk-engine-lighthouseblue package from synaptic and changing the configuration for my KDE desktop.
Now,if i run emerald at console does nothing

I suggest an easier method. You probably are missing a library.
They have a repository:

Remove the sudo if it's for debian and run it as root.


Put this in /etc/apt/sources.list

I did what you said but still the same

Is there a change that my kde desktop has some kind of problem ?Because sometimes some applications stack and it pop up a window which says it's not responding and i have to terminate it.
Also,my screen saver doesn't work

Write down all the activate plugins and deactive them in beryl-settings.

Are your graphics cards driver well installed? What card? ATI?

I have not a bit of knowledge about nvidia&ati, I run an Intel which works (slowly) out of the box.

My card is Nvdia Geforce 7600GT.I have all the drivers installed.
I googled "GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap" and i think nvdia does not support it yet.
But i can't understand how i run beryl the first time and everything went ok!

I did dpkg -l | grep libgl :

I didn't find any plugins in beryl to deactivate them.Or i can't understand what you say.

I meant that you should run beryl-settings and remove all plugins (untick everything)
because I'm not sure your freeze is due to this warning, eventhough there is a lot of chance your card handles texture from X11 pixmaps.
Which would explain why it worked before you changed something. It's probably a bad setting (*)


Actually maybe libglew1 is missing, have a try:

Restart machine and Retry.

glxinfo -l

I just have another idea: create a new temporary user so that you don't need to bother.
adduser beryltest

and do all your tests from scratch with clean config. Do not activate Water plugin. It needs one more extension I think (which I also don't have so water does not work here)

Try to check your NVIDIA driver version too, Beryl requires at least the 1.0-9629.

Ok ,what i did so far.
I installed a new nvidia driver but it didn't work.I din't have X environment and when i loaded the older xorg.conf it didn't work either.So,i installed etch from the beginning..
I installed beryl again and now when i run beryl-manager nothing happens,the system doesn't freeze.Beryl icon goes to the bottom right of the control panel.
Now,when i right click on it it gives me some options.One of them is "Adanced beryl options,Rendering path and there ,has 'Automatic,Texture From Pixmap,Copy'
I leave it to Automatic ,so i think the problem i had before
( Checking for GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap :failed
No GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap)
doesn't come up.

My glxinfo -l gives :
My glxinfo |grep rendering is ok
I have installed libglew1 and mesa-utils
