Beating dependency blues

I have tried to install many programs and given up because it seems impossible to satisfy dependencies. I am running Debian Sarge. Is there anything I can do to make it easier to install programs?

Some programs that I have tried to install are:

LimeWire, Azureus, aMule....

and I can't seem to meet the requirements.

Is there any way to beat the dependency blues?

Make sure (with for example azureus) that you enable the contrib repo, update your apt sources and then use the apt-get command to install the package. If there are further errors it would be helpful to post the actual terminal output. HERE is a list of the azureus deps if you want to grab them and install locally.

I'd just suggest using "aptitude install" as it lets you uninstall every package you installed together with dependencies

Yes, you can do the same in Synaptic by just ticking that option.
You can also config it to find orphans automagically.

What is the contrib repo?

There are packages that azureus depends on that are not available. Is there any way around that?

Thanks

contrib repo

This refers to /etc/apt/sources.list wc has your sarge site e.g.
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ sarge main contrib non-free

yours maybe different but principle same.
Change the end as above then apt-get update
then try what was suggested for azureus earlier with apt-get or synaptic or aptitude. Learn one method and know it then expand.
Good luck with debian.

1. Unofficial APT Search
2. Results
